Palermo: Migranti al Giardino dei Giusti – Teatro e Discussione
Palermo is once again at the center of national debate on civil rights thanks to a new initiative proposed by Raizes Theater, the Gonzaga Alumni Association, the Astalli Center, and the Alloro Fest. On Sunday, September 10th at 7:30pm, at the Giardino dei Giusti in via Alloro, the first stage of the Terra project will take place, promoting solidarity and the values expressed by the Conventions that regulate the rights of refugees and human dignity for the development of virtuous policies for the management of migration flows in collaboration with EU institutions and Mediterranean countries.
The event will open at 5:00pm with an exhibition by photojournalist Francesco Malavolta entitled “Faces of the Future”, which represents the faces of young refugees and focuses on their right to change their lives and the need to ensure them the opportunity to look towards a better future. At 7:30pm, the performance Discipline Room, written by Alessandro Ienzi and performed by Francesco Campolo, will begin. Produced by Raizes Theater with the support of ERSU Palermo, the performance explores the conditions of refugees detained in prison during their long journey to freedom: it tells of the limbo, dreams, and aspirations of travelers often imprisoned, subjected to inhumane and degrading treatments, and forced to pay large sums of money for their release and continue their journey.
At 8:15pm, the debate moderated by journalist Elvira Terranova, Adnkronos chief editor, will involve Father Camillo Ripamonti, president of the Astalli Center, Prefect Valerio Valenti, extraordinary commissioner for migrant emergencies, and Remon Karam, activist and protagonist of “Il mare nasconde le stelle”. “The Terra project combines art, culture, and civic and political debate,” says Ienzi. “It explores possible approaches to a topic that concerns all of humanity: migration. The journey from one country to another in search of better living conditions takes on an even more significant dimension when the lives of travelers are endangered by extreme conditions they are subjected to, and it concerns all states when travelers have refugee status because they are fleeing serious human rights violations. The Terra project positions Palermo at the center of the Euro-Mediterranean debate through art and culture.”
The project is proposed in the year of the 10th anniversary of the Lampedusa shipwreck, which occurred on October 3rd, 2013, and it follows the presentation of the performance “La Porta della Vita” written by Francesco Viviano, produced by Raizes and presented in July by the Terra project partners in Palermo.
“The Terra project,” adds Carmelo Cottone from the Astalli Center, “promotes the reception and defense of our foreign brethren who flee from injustices and wars and seek the support of a country that allows them to express their potential and abilities in the service of humanity.” The event, which is supported by the Municipality of Palermo, is free and open to everyone.
