Gianfranco Fini critica il blocco navale come mera propaganda

Gianfranco Fini, former President of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, believes that the naval blockade on immigration is just propaganda and that the Bossi-Fini law on immigration needs to be changed. In an interview with Il Fatto Quotidiano, Fini sends a clear message to Giorgia Meloni and her government, stating that he sees the government’s actions on migrant arrivals as positive, but urges them to avoid a permanent election campaign, starting with “rally-style” speeches. According to Fini, the law he signed with the former leader of the League had a clear objective: economic migrants have the right to enter Italy only if they have a job contract. However, he argues that in the past twenty years, the international landscape has changed and the phenomenon of migration has transformed. Today, it involves hundreds of thousands of people and is driven by major economic and social factors such as the gap between the North and South of the world, social unrest, and the collapse of certain states like Syria and Libya. Therefore, Fini believes the law needs to be changed.

Fini also recalls that the law included provisions for regular entry quotas, which led to a regularization of hundreds of thousands of migrants. He sees this as the model to follow. He believes that the political debate should go beyond the daily rhetoric of a naval blockade, which is typical of an election campaign. The operation Sophia, which aimed to control migrant arrivals with European ships, only partially succeeded due to resistance from national states that wanted to maintain the Dublin Agreement. Fini believes that the propaganda surrounding this issue needs to stop. He warns that if the campaign continues permanently in view of the European elections, the situation will only worsen, with increased xenophobia and social unrest. He emphasizes that the current focus should be on controlling immigration, but also on how to integrate migrants into society.
