Isabella Rossellini, the 71-year-old actress, director, model, and ethologist, is the protagonist of the new issue of Vogue Italy, available from October 3rd. The icon, who once again graces the cover of the magazine, was portrayed by the young Malaysian photographer Zhong Lin in a photo shoot that ranges from the real to the surreal. As previously stated, this is not the first time the actress poses for Vogue; in fact, she has been on the cover 38 times, embodying the evolution of the concept of beauty over the years: “Thank you for letting me keep my wrinkles.”

In the October issue of Vogue, Isabella Rossellini, in addition to being the main face, spoke in an interview conducted by Gianluca Farinelli, President of the Cinema per Roma Foundation. First and foremost, she spoke about her love for cinema: “The first time I fell in love with cinema was with Disney’s ‘101 Dalmatians.’ I was nine years old and already loved animals. I watched it twice in a row, one show after another. I was enchanted, perhaps because I was experiencing the emotion that cinema gives us, which is to enter another world.” Furthermore, her importance in the industry will lead her to the Rome Film Festival where she will receive a career achievement award. During the festival, she will also present her latest film “The Chimera,” which will be released on November 23rd. In Rome, Rossellini will also be among the guests of Forces of Fashion: Vogue’s global event that will take place on October 21st and will tell the world of fashion.

In telling her story, the actress also remembered her mother, the successful Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman: “I remember the first time I had a shock: it happened with Victor Fleming’s ‘Joan of Arc.’ She was the protagonist, she was hit by an arrow and then burned… When we saw the scene of the burning, we children burst into tears. They took us out of the cinema. Mom, who wasn’t with us, had to rush home and show that she was alive. I still remember the terror I felt in that theater.” Then she talked about how her mother was a great example for her: “Her time was still an era when it was believed that women were naturally inclined to stay at home and take care of children and husbands. But with my mother’s example and the 1970s, an explosive period of feminism in Italy, I quickly made the decision to be an independent woman. That’s why I was already earning a living at 22: independence is first and foremost a financial matter.”

Her career as a model began with Vogue Italy when she was asked to pose for her first shoot: “I entered the world of fashion through the main door.” Among the artists she collaborated with, she remembered Richard Avedon: “Once he told me, ‘The model is like a silent film actress. She doesn’t have dialogue, but she must express emotions. I photograph emotions, not your beautiful nose! Know that there is no beauty without emotions.’ That’s how I understood the profession of a model. Then he encouraged me to become an actress. ‘You are already a silent film actress. Now you just have to add words!'” However, once her experience as a model ended, Isabella decided to enroll in university where she graduated in ethology and is now a successful director of films that feature animals.
